Stay Delighted

I’ve been enjoying the tentative little tendrils poking their tiny heads out of the ground wondering if it’s OK to be out. They must know these are dangerous times. Old Man Winter can come back and blow through at any moment. But the more days we get in the 50s and 60s, the bolder they get.

Daffodils don’t give a damn. As soon as there’s a thaw, they jump right up and bloom, just daring it to snow. They are the badasses of the flower kingdom.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of the change of seasons and how it always thrills me. Once a person quits being delighted by things like the freshness of spring flowers, or fireworks in July, or the perfect ice cream cone, they’re on their way out of this life. I’ve seen it and I know it’s true. So, please stay delighted.

I’ve been all over the place lately. I’m mostly busy working on my writing, but I did find a few things that made me laugh so hard I had to share them. One was this sign about marriage that popped up when I was researching something online. I think I spit my latte all over my bathrobe realizing even the internet knows I’m jaded. Every time I look at it, I burst into laughter.

Then there was the cartoon in the New Yorker below, proving that the artist who drew it is clearly spying on me at home. I have been working with a trainer, and even though I swore I’d go to the gym every week, I’ve been terrible. I do exercise and do yoga, but I prefer walking outside. Plus all those buff people in the gym are really intimidating.

And one more of my utterly random thoughts and then I’ll let you go in peace. Ever buy celery, leave it in the plastic bag in your fridge and then find it two weeks later a soggy, gross mess? The internet gave me this answer too. Rinse the celery to get the dirt off, dry it and wrap it in aluminum foil, folding it over to seal it. Then put it in the refrigerator. This celery in the photo is about a month old! (Not that I recommend keeping celery for a month, but isn’t that impressive?)

Lastly, I bought something called Pan Angeli at the Italian store last week. It’s like a vanilla flavored baking powder and was hoping I could dazzle you with a new recipe, but the cookies I tried didn’t work out so well. I’ll try again and if they’re good, I’ll report back.

In the meantime, enjoy spring! It’s such a beautiful time of year. Go out, take a walk, look around and be delighted, then stay delighted. You’ll never get old.
