I’ve come to realize that western Pennsylvania does not have perfect weather very often, which is why when a perfect night like last night offered itself up, I jumped on it. The sky was a moody navy blue with puffs of cottony clouds that let a few stars peek through.
As I’ve mentioned at least a million times, fall is my favorite time — with temperatures in the 50s and a brisk wind that leaves your cheeks pink and your legs almost skipping, as if they think you’re twelve-years-old again. The trees are turning glorious reds and yellows that take your breath away with their beauty.
I remember a gorgeous fall afternoon like that when I actually was twelve-years-old. I was in the basement of my parents’ home where I used to study. My homework sat in front of me on the desk, and I forced myself to stay in instead of going out and walking around in the soft green grass soaking up that crisp, cool autumn evening. I was proud of myself for my determination and discipline, but I remember that day well and still wish I would have taken just a minute to go out and savor it.
I don’t remember what grade I got on the homework, but I do remember longing to experience that beautiful moment. So, here’s what I learned: If you’re ever in the middle of work, and it happens to be a gorgeous fall day, go out, just for a minute, and experience it. The work will wait for one minute, the day won’t.
As I walked I saw the Harmony Inn glowing with a welcoming light as they served their last round of drinks outside.
The weather forecast for rain was right on. It’ll last through the morning and all day long. I’m praying it clears up so we can enjoy the beautiful trees that even look gorgeous against night’s shadows.
But if not, I drank my fill of a perfect fall evening in a tiny town called Harmony which looks so inviting sometimes, and sometimes…like a great place to shoot a horror movie.
I wish you all a Happy Halloween with delighted kids and lots of love. I’ll be making my annual Slow Cooked Chuck Roast with Wine and Onions, inspired by Mrs. Santelli all those years ago. And if it clears up, you can bet I’ll be out there tromping in the crunchy leaves, enjoying it.
