|As the daughter of a woman who entered every possible contest, and won a few, I have weak moments. So when a friend, who works for San Marzano tomatoes, asked if I would post a contest in my blog so that (potentially) one of my lucky readers might win a dinner at a local restaurant valued at $250 dollars, I said, “Heck yeah!” (I am not being paid to do this either.) |
I entered it because I didn’t want to send you guys to something I hadn’t tried first. Plus, who doesn’t want a chance to win a 250 dollar meal, right? It only takes a minute and, if you win, all I ask is that you tell me all about what you ate. I love living vicariously through other people’s food.
When I was younger, I had no idea San Marzano tomatoes were different than the usual plum tomatoes, but they are. They’re grown and picked exclusively for the can in the volcanic-rich soil near the infamous Mt. Vesuvius, not far from where my mom grew up. (I like to think a little Vesuvius ash crept into Mom’s blood, which would explain her frequent outbursts.) They’re called The “Crown Jewel” of European canned tomatoes because of their high quality, beautiful shade of red, fewer seeds, elongated cylindrical shape, and fabulous flavor.
And they’re only grown in the San Marzano area in southern Italy. DOP is one of the most important things to understand when learning how to shop for authentic products. DOP stands for Protected Designation of Origin, or Denominazione di Origine Protetta. Foods like San Marzano Tomatoes, Parmigiano Reggiano, Proscuitto di Parma and other luscious Italian items are also protected products from specific regions and are marked that way, so you know they’re the real deal!
The Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese-Nocerino DOP, have no additives or salt, and are filled with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. I love them for pasta sauces, but they’re great in stews, soups, pizza, chile etc.
So, all you have to do is click on this link: https://ilovesanmarzanodop.com/news-en/enter-here-to-win/?lang=en and fill out the entry form. Good luck! I’m rooting for you.
